Eine Reise mit Rhino Watch Safaris

Eine ganze Weile sind wird zurück von der Rhino Watch Lodge, und langsam sortieren sich Eindrücke und die Berge von Fotos. Wir haben drei wunderschöne Wochen in Kenia verbringen dürfen, den größten Teil davon auf Franks Lodge, umsorgt von einem Heer freundlicher Menschen. Wir vermissen das alles sehr. Wer Entspannung sucht und Tiere mag, kann es nicht besser treffen. Wir waren viel in den Parks und Reservaten unterwegs, stundenlang, und Moses, unser kundiger Fahrer verlor nie die Geduld mit uns. Aber zwischendurch hatten wir auch immer den einen oder anderen Ruhetag auf der Lodge. Vor dem Chalet in der Sonne hocken, die Aussicht auf den Garten, die Savanne und Mount Kenya genießen, den Vögeln zusehen und auf das nächste Essen warten – auch so kann man den Tag prima rumkriegen.

Was wir gesehen haben? Klar, die Big Five und auch all die anderen Tiere, derentwegen man Kenia besucht.

Eigentlich kennt man sie ja alle von zuhause aus dem Zoo, wo man zudem manches Tier viel näher oder überhaupt richtig sieht. Einen Löwen, Elefanten, Gepard überhaupt zu sehen ist nicht der Punkt. Sondern diese Tiere so zu sehen, nein, zu erleben.

Wenn eine Elefantenkuh und ihr Kalb im ausgetrockneten Flußbett des Uaso Nyiro River nach Wasser graben …

… , wenn Hippos in der Morgendämmerung im Lake Baringo balgen …

…, wenn sich ein ganzer Schwarm Flamingos, aufgeschreckt von einem Fischadler, gleichzeitig in die Lüfte erhebt …

… oder einfach nur ein Herde Impalas in der Kühle des frühen Morgens durch die Steppe springt, so dass man das Gefühl hat, dass es ihnen einfach Spaß macht …

…, dann ist es etwas ganz Besonderes. Und das alles und viel mehr erleben zu dürfen war einfach toll. Danke an Frank, seine Familie und alle die anderen guten Geister von „Rhino“, dass sie uns diese schöne Zeit möglich gemacht haben.

Elephanten sehen wir bei unseren Safaris im Amboseli Nationalpark oder wie hier im Samburu Natonalpark in großer Anzahl.

Von der Rhino watch Safari Lodge sind es nur gute 2 Stunden bis wir im Samburu Nationalpark sind. Dort verbringen wir normalerweise 3 tage um Elephanten aber auch Leoparden Gerenuk Antilopen und Gravy´s Zebras zu beobachten.

Ol Pajetta Schutzgebiet in der Nähe der Rhino Watch Safari Lodge

Während Wilderer in Simbabwe in den vergangenen Tagen sieben Spitzmaulnashörner erlegt haben, könnte sich ein junges ausgewildertes Paar Nördlicher Breitmaulnashörner in Kenia bald vermehren. Die aus einem tschechischen Zoo in das private Naturschutzreservat Ol Pejeta gebrachten Tiere haben sich nämlich gepaart. "Es ist passiert!" berichtete am Dienstag die Sprecherin des Reservats, Elodie Sampere. Ob die Romanze der beiden Kolosse Suni und Fatu Folgen haben wird, muss sich noch zeigen.

Nördliche Breitmaulnashörner sind akut vom Aussterben bedroht. Außer den im Dezember 2009 aus Dvur Kralove ausgewilderten Tieren in Ol Pejeta sind nur noch vier Tiere in einem US-Zoo bekannt, die aber zu alt für Nachwuchs sind. Mit der "Operation letzte Chance" wurde der Versuch unternommen, in einer natürlichen Umgebung den bisher paarungsfaulen Tieren doch noch Anreize für die Zeugung von Nachwuchs zu schaffen. Wegen der Bedrohung durch Wilderer leben die Nashörner in einem weiträumig eingezäunten Gebiet und werden rund um die Uhr bewacht. Peilsender im Horn der Tiere ermöglichen es den Wildhütern, den Aufenthaltsort stets genau bestimmen zu können.

TV teams come in very often to use our place as a base to film african wildlife. See below the camerateam with a white Rhino at Solio Game Reserve. Solio Game Reserve is located only 3 minutes from our Lodge and we are specialised in working with Rhinos.

The Makinder Eagle Owl is endemic to our pace. We know where this wonderfull birds nest. This is a young eagle owl that we rescued in December 2009. She was fallen out of her nest and close to finish. Now she has a new home at Ralph Helfers place, the former Hollywood animal trainer is our neighbor. He trained the lion of the TV show Daktari !

What a lucky group. Ruben and his friends met us in Pico in the summer 2009. After some hours of talk they became interested to visit Rhino Watch......and so it happened. In January 2010 five spanish amigos arrived for the Rhino Watch Special week.
The game drive to Solio game reserve was the highlight of the trip because they saw the wedding of the Lions.....What a lucky day.

Solio game reserve

The Solio Game Reserve is one the last sanctuaries of black and white Rhinos in Africa. Nowhere else you can find so many animals as here. A game drive into Solio is a voyage into the past....maybe 100 ago. Here you find herds of Rhinos grazing in front of Mt. Kenya.
"And they have their horns". In many other places Rhino horn are cut of to protect them from poaching.
The best place in the world to take pictures of black and white Rhinos is Solio Game Reserve. But also many other animals can be found. Since 31st December we did not do a single game drive without seeing the leopard in Solio, often we see her with her young.

Uli und Viola waren bereits meine Gäste in Patagonien. Im September gingen wir gemeinsam auf safari in kenya....Hier der Bericht!

Wer eine sehr individuell zusammen gestellte Foto-Safari-Reise durch Kenia machen möchte, freut sich, wenn er einen professionellen Organisator wie Frank an seiner Seite hat, der sich in diesem Land an allen Orten seit Jahren bestens auskennt und immer wieder klasse auf spezielle Wünsche seiner Gäste eingehen kann.

Bei den vielen täglichen Ausfahrten, die wir bei unserer Tour quer durch Kenia im letzten Herbst durchführten, stand stets die ausgedehnte Tierbeobachtung ohne jeglichen zeitlichen Druck im Vordergrund. Im Safari-Auto, welches hervorragend von seinem Schwager Moses gesteuert wird, waren wir nur mit maximal 3 Personen unterwegs. Somit hatten wir immer ausreichend Platz für unsere Foto-Ausrüstung, ohne uns dabei nicht gegenseitig in die Quere zu kommen und immer alle Zeit der Welt, um völlig stressfrei tolle Bilder einzufangen.
Nach ausgedehnten Pirschfahrten legte Frank dann auch noch zu unserer Freude besonderen Wert auf unser kulinarisches Wohlergehen, um den Abend bei tollen landestypischen Speisen und Getränken ausklingen zu lassen.
Super waren auch die spontanen Feiern mit der Familie von Kendy, seiner Frau; oder aber gemeinsame Abende mit seinen Freunden und Nachbarn auf seiner Lodge. In diesen Situationen fühlten wir uns seiner Familie dazugehörig - dafür einen ganz besonderen lieben Dank!

Genialer Ausgangspunkt für so eine individuelle Fotosafari ist die von Frank jetzt fertig gestellte Rhino Watch Safari Lodge am Fuße des Mt. Kenya, ca. 2 Autostunden von Nairobi entfernt.
Auf dem Weg dorthin fuhren wir durch kilometerlange Ananas -, Kaffee- oder Tee-plantagen. Jeder kleine Ort wird zu einem kurzen Stopp genutzt, um am Straßenrand lokale Spezialitäten zu kosten und diese für den täglichen Bedarf auf der Lodge einzukaufen – verantwortlich für das leibliche Wohl ist hier Franks liebe Schwägerin Miriam – unvergessen bleibt dabei unser Besuch eines schönen Gemüse- und Früchtemarktes in Karatina.
Angekommen auf Rhino, führt uns „Kitchen-John“, die gute Seele auf der Lodge, sofort in die Geheimnisse der afrikanischen Küche ein.
Die Lodge bietet sowohl toll eingerichtete große Chalets als auch geräumige schöne Zelte an – perfekt für einen schönen Start in unseren Safariurlaub. Wir können nur empfehlen, hier mehrere Tage einzuplanen, denn direkt vor der Haustür der Lodge liegen sehr schöne Nationalparks wie z.B. Solio mit der größten zentrierten Population an Breit- und Spitzmaulnashörnern, oder das Ol-Pejeta-Schutzgebiet mit einer Auffangstation für Schimpansen, der Aberdare-NP mit seinen schönen Wasserfällen, immerhin auf einer Höhe von ca. 3200m gelegen und der Möglichkeit von Fußmärschen inmitten von Giraffen – super Momente, die wir in tollen Bildern festhalten konnten.

Von der Rhino Lodge ging es dann zunächst zu einem Aufenthalt zum Nakuru NP, bevor wir uns fast eine Woche in der Massai Mara einquartierten, eines der Hauptziele unserer Reise, um die Beobachtung der „Great Migration“ über den Mara-River aus nächster Nähe zu erleben. Ausgangspunkt hierfür war das von Frank speziell ausgesuchte Zeltcamp Mara Siria, hoch auf einem Berg gelegen, ca. 10 min.
vom Eingang des NP entfernt, mit einer tollen Aussicht auf die gesamte Mara-Ebene – absolut empfehlenswert!!
Klasse spannende Erlebnisse sollten in den Folgetagen auf uns zu kommen!!
Bereits am ersten Tag hatten wir das Glück, die Flussüberquerung der Gnus und Zebras mitzuerleben. Löwen, Geparden und auch die scheuen Leoparden gehörten ebenso zu unseren Fotomotiven wie zahlreiche landestypische Vögel.
Auf dem Rückweg legten wir Tagesstopps am Lake Naivasha und am Crater Lake ein – auch ein absolutes Muß für jeden Vogel – und hier speziell Flamingo-Begeisterten. Die Unterkunft in einem Chalet am Crater-Lake war der absolute Hammer!
Die nächsten 2 Tage ließen wir uns nochmals auf Rhino so richtig schön verwöhnen, bevor wir zum Lake Baringo und Lake Bogoria aufbrachen.
Hier hatten wir das einmalige Erlebnis, die stolzen Schreiseeadler, auch oft genannt als die „Stimme Afrikas“, bei ihrem Sturzflug auf den See zu beobachten und ihre Beute, vorzugsweise kleine Fische, aus dem See holen. Am Lake Bogoria versammeln sich hunderttausende Flamingos. Besondere Sehenswürdigkeit sind auch die heißen Geysire, in denen sich leider auch immer wieder vereinzelte Flamingos verirren und im heißen Wasser sofort sterben.
Zum Abschluss machten wir dann noch einen mehrtägigen Ausflug zum Samburu NP. Frank hatte uns ein wunderschönes Zelt-Camp direkt an einem Flussbett gelegen, welches zum Zeitpunkt unserer Ankunft ausgetrocknet war, ausgesucht. Zum Sundowner erlebten wir tolle Ausblicke über die Landschaft und zum Dinner liefen die Elefanten quer durchs Camp – was will man mehr!
Bei unseren Fahrten durch den Park konnten wir nicht nur die hier lebende Giraffengarzellen beobachten. Es gelangen uns hier auch wunderschöne Aufnahmen von Leoparden.
Unvergesslich dann aber unsere letzte Nacht im Camp!
Über Nacht wurde aus diesem ausgetrocknetem Flussbett ein reißender Strom mit mindestens einem Meter Wassertiefe – endlich kam die Regenzeit! Eine große Freude für alle dort lebenden Leute – monatelang hatten sie auf diesen Moment gewartet.

Wir können diese Tour nur jedem Kenia-Begeisterten empfehlen.
Frank versteht es immer wieder, seine Leute sehr persönlich zu betreuen und
individuell auf die Wünsche seiner Gäste einzugehen. Besonders die sehr familiäre Atmosphäre auf seiner Rhino Lodge wird uns in sehr guter in Erinnerung bleiben.

News from Rhino Watch. we have finished our 2 new units for family´s. This big Chalets have 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. They are located close to the pond where lots of birds can bee seen.

Also the flowers around our normal Chalets have been growing and make a wonderfull display.

Chalet Nr. 1 is located on the highest point of the Chalet section.

Hi Frank, just wanted to say many thanks for a great safari! I enjoyed meeting some of your family. Moses & Miriam took great care of me. Enjoyed the safari at Solio, got some great rhino shots, some with young ones. Samburu was beautiful also, got the oryx (some with babies) and zebras I wanted, also a wonderful encounter with a very close leopard. Your lodge is beautiful, and I wish you the best of luck in your operations. Thank you so much for arranging such a great safari, I really had a wonderful time. Hope to see you again sometime. Australians in Kenya

For Australians, it's a long trek to Kenya. If you add to that a dragging a bunch of heavy telephoto lenses and cameras in and out of airports and airplanes, the destination just better be damn good. On our second day in the country, as a lone leopard began a long and languid stroll towards our 4WD, I knew we were on a winner. From the lush Cloud Forest of the Aberdares to the dry and dusty Savannah of Samburu animals and birds paraded past our hungry cameras in unending procession. Early morning sunlight glinted from a Long-tailed Widowbird as the male danced to attract the rather drab females, Thompson's Gazelles ran towards the rising sun creating magnificent silhouettes. Lions strutted by and lazed the day away pausing to yawn and displace a cloud of flies. The 16 Gb cards in the cameras filled quickly.

The volcanic soda lakes provided a contrasting environment. Great flocks of pelicans, cranes and flamingoes dotted the shores of Lake Nakuru. Spotted Hyenas finished a meal of Giraffe and ran to the water. Of course the intimate body sniffing protocols were rigorously observed as they relaxed like children at the seaside. Concentration was intense and lenses swung in unison as the pelican flights took off and landed. Pied kingfishers watched cautiously from a distant branch. Of course the Marabou Storks always tried to interpose their ugly countenance and ruin the odd perfect composition. I am sure they occupy an important ecological niche - one just wishes it was on another planet.

From Amboseli the snow-crowned peak of Kilimanjaro dominated the contradiction of the arid plains and lush swamp lands that comprise this National Park. The swamps provided a daily spa for Elephants, Hippo and Buffalo. At dusk, the mighty herds of pachyderms trekked single file from the water to the forest. Wildebeest gnu-ed their way around and also managed to mess up an otherwise good composition.

A sneaky little Malachite Kingfisher lurked near a causeway necessitation many return trips to capture his regal splendor. Of great pathos was the Baboon mother with a sickly infant. It struggled to keep up and suckled hungrily when mum would stop. As the anguished human-like features of that doomed face gazed at us, it would have been a nicety to repeal to the laws of survival articulated by Darwin. But this is Africa!

It was our last day and we struck out across a trackless plain. Away from any road, we passed Maasai settlements with protective encirclements of brush bomas. Small children diligently watched over small herds of goats. The foothills of Kilimanjaro loomed. A message jumped onto the screen of my Iphone "Karibu, Welcome to Vodacom Tanzania." We were near our destination of the border town of Namanga and the end of our trip.

20,000 images, 16 days in Kenya with fellow photographic travelers from France, Germany, Holland and Australia. Thank you to our hosts, Frank and Kendy Wirth, it just doesn't get better than this.

Une jeune femme heureuse !

La période de ma vie entre le 17 janvier, et le 3 février 2009 a été un rêve devenu réalité !

Me voilà enfin au Kenya, avec Franck Wirth, un vrai passionné de tout ce qui est nature et animalier ! Et une superbe équipe de gens aussi passionné et émerveillé par la nature !

J’ai découvert un pays très riche en paysages, riches en mammifères, en oiseaux… Les parcs nationaux ou privés sont là pour nos offrir tout ça : Ol Pajeta, Solio, Aberder, Lac Nakuru, Lac Naivasha, Amboseli, Samburu…
Chaqu’un d’entre eux a un charme, ils sont vraiment tous différents, de part leurs habitants et leur décor, nous passons de la savane à la jungle, puis on se retrouve dans les collines en passant par d’immenses plaines de culture, et finalement on fini dans le désert avec des tornades de sable…

Quand aux « campements » j’ai adoré, nous dormons dans des tentes plus ou moins bien aménagées, mais c’est ce qui donne un peu de piments, c’est également ce qui nous rapproche du pays, de la nature.
Dans certains endroits on se fait réveiller par un éléphant qui mange juste à côté de la tente, ou par des lions qui rugissent…
Des singes visitent la tente si on ne la ferme pas bien !!!
Ou alors en ouvrant la guitoune on se retrouve face du mont Kenya, ou devant un lac, c’est paradisiaque.

Nous avons vécu des moments inoubliables, notamment les éléphants qui passent à quelques mètres de la jeep, ces immenses mammifères ornés de défenses impressionnantes, avec leur bébé qui court à leur côté pour ne pas se retrouver à la traîne.

Les lions qui s’accouplent dans la lumière chaude du soir accompagné des rugissements de douleurs pour la femelle, et les petits, qui sont déjà bien grands, qui jouent entre eux un peu plus loin…

Sans oublier les Girafes qui se font des câlins entre mère et petit, et ceux qui se « battent » entre adultes. Ça ressemble à une danse très jolie, très gracieuse, le cou des 2 Girafes qui s’emmèlent.
La tête qui s’élève lentement jusqu’à la cime des grands arbres, puis redescend au sol pour se désaltérer.

Et les singes très expressifs qui vous regardent curieusement, oh, mais il y avait un petit qui se cachait sous le ventre de sa maman, lui savait que vous étiez là, il se sert contre maman pour être sûr qu’il ne lui arrivera rien.
C’est adorable, comment ne pas craquer, c’est impossible !

J’ai failli oublier les Rhinocéros, et pourtant ils m’on marqués, c’est énormes animaux pleins de muscles, et en même temps, le fait de les voir avec leurs petits adouci toute cette puissance qu’on peut ressentir.

Quand aux Hippopotames avec leurs dents qui ne rassurent pas vraiment, ont un petit côté mignon, tout rose avec leurs petits yeux doux.

Les Buffles sont aussi impressionnants que vous le pensez, les antilopes aussi belles et gracieuses que dans votre imagination, les oiseux sont beaucoup plus nombreux que vous ne pouvez le croire, et très colorés !
Vous pouvez même rencontrer « Pumba » le phacochère.

Je suis vraiment ravi, surprise et heureuse d’avoir eu la chance de faire ce voyage avec ces gens aussi sensibles et passionnés.
Je rentre chez moi avec la certitude de repartir dans peu de temps, avec un petit regret de quitter ce pays et en même temps avec un sourire comme je l’ai rarement eu, et finalement avec un soulagement car je n’ai absolument plus de place pour stocker mes images…

Abenteuer Kenia (15.1 – 01.02.2009)

Von Nairobi aus ging es direkt zur Rhino Watch Safari Lodge. Die Lodge ist der ideale Ausgangspunkt, um die noch von relativ wenig Touristen besuchte Gegend zu erkunden. Auch den Blick von der Terrasse unseres Bungalows auf den Mount Kenia werden wir sicher nicht vergessen.
Schon auf dem Gelände der Rhino Watch Safari Lodge ergeben sich viele Möglichkeiten die Vogelwelt Kenias zu beobachten.
Die Bungalows liegen schön an einem Hang und sind liebevoll im afrikanischem Stil eingerichtet. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und war stets um unser Wohl besorgt.

Unsere erste Safari ging zur Solio Ranch die nur 5 Minuten von der Lodge entfernt liegt.
Auf der 60.000 Are großen Ranch haben die Besitzer 18.000 Are für die Aufzucht von Breitmaulnashörnern bereitgestellt, nachdem diese in Kenia fast ausgestorben waren. Die Erfolge auf der Ranch können sich sehen lassen. Zur Zeit leben ca. 130 Nashörner auf der Ranch. Einige der Nashörner wurden bereits in andere Nationalparks ausgewildert. Die Ranch bietet ausgedehnte weite Flächen aber auch dicht bewaldete Flächen und Sümpfe. Die Tierwelt auf dem riesigen Areal ist sehr vielfältig. Wir haben dort Hunderte von europäischen Störchen angetroffen, die hier überwintern. Ein schöner Anblick den wir in Deutschland noch nie hatten.

Der Aberdare Nationalpark liegt ebenfalls nicht weit von der Lodge entfernt. Dieser Park hat uns sehr ins Stauen versetzt, da der Park ein ausgedehnter Regenwald ist. In den höheren Lagen des Parks findet man ausgedehnte Bambuswälder mit denen man eigentlich nicht rechnet. In den Baumwipfeln tummeln sich Affen, eine Vielzahl an Vögeln und auch Elefanten lassen sich immer mal wieder zwischen den Bäumen blicken. Wir hatten das große Glück 2 Leoparden zu erspähen, die sich allerdings schnell wieder ins Unterholz zurückgezogen haben.

Ein weiteres Safariziel in der Nähe der Lodge ist die Ol Pejeta Ranch, die die „Big Five“ zu bieten hat. Wir fanden witzig, dass man auf der Fahrt zur Ranch den Äquator überquert. Auch „Max“ ein von handaufgezogener Nashornbulle, der mit seinem Ranger Ziehvater über die Ranch spaziert, werden wir in Erinnerung behalten.

Die nächste Station unserer Reise war der Lake Nakuru N.P., der für seine Millionen von Flamingos bekannt ist. Der Park liegt landschaftlich sehr schön eingebettet im Rift Valley. Die Flamingos waren leider ausgeflogen, aber dafür gab es viele Pelikane und rosa Störche am Seeufer. Frank hat natürlich wir immer eine Lösung für die ausgeflogenen Flamingos gefunden. Wir sind Ihnen einfach an den Lake Naivasha gefolgt. Dort kamen wir in den Genuss auch noch Flusspferde inmitten der Flamingos zu beobachten. Frank ist einfach genial in diesen Dingen und er kennt sich bestens aus. Wir finden das immer wieder faszinierend wie flexibel Frank immer mit den Situationen umgeht.

Die 2 Tage am Crater Lake standen ganz im Zeichen der Vogelbeobachtung. Die Umgebung ist perfekt dafür. Zu Fuß lässt sich der Crater Lake bequem umrunden und bietet eine Vielzahl von Fotomöglichkeiten. Auch zum Entspannen die perfekte Location.

Unsere letzte Station war der Amboseli N.P., direkt am Fuße des schneebedeckten Gipfels des Kilimanjaros. Mit seiner riesigen Population an Elefanten, die sich tagsüber in den Sümpfen tummeln schlägt das Fotografenherz gleich ein paar Takte schneller. Elefanten inmitten von Grün ist ein perfektes Motiv. Auch die restliche Tierwelt ist reichlich vertreten. Große Gnu-, Büffel- und Zebraherden ziehen durch die Savanne, Löwen dösen an ihren Lieblingsplätzen, Kingfischer sind an dem Sumpfränder gut zu beobachten. Ein Ort an den man gerne ein paar Tage verbringt.

Leider geht auch das schönste Abenteuer zu Ende, aber das nächste Abenteuer gemeinsam mit Frank kommt bestimmt.
Wie immer war alles perfekt von Frank geplant, alle Tiere auf unserer Wunschliste haben wir vor die Linse bekommen und noch viele mehr. Die Gruppe hat super zusammengepasst und wir haben an vielen Abenden gemeinsam in unseren Safarierlebnissen geschwelgt und viel gelacht.

Mt. Kenya Trek - Siriman Route, January 12, 2009

The climb from Siriman Gate up to the camp called Old Moses is a consistent ascent, climbing a gentle grade along a two track dirt road beat up by four-wheel-drive Land Cruisers and safari cars - fortunately I never saw any vehicles. In the early morning Colubus Monkeys could be heard shrieking from the shaded trees. I was keeping an eye and ear out for elephants crossing through the forest, no such luck though. In the cool breezy morning air, sun shining down from a nearly cloudless sky, myself and four others - one tourist, two porters and a guide - were walking from the gate at 8340’ up to Old Moses which is situated at 10,000’. Two and a half hours is what it took to reach the first camp, which we had planned to spend our first night. Our arrival at 10:30 gave us a chance to reconsider wasting the entire day sitting at Old Moses. So after a brief discussion with our guide, Fredrick - who made his first journey to Mt. Kenya nearly 30 years ago - a plan was made to continue on the trail up to the Shipton Camp. But first we had to have some breakfast.

A knowelgeable and experienced guide can be a wonderful addition to your backcountry experience, offering discussional information about the history, vegetation, wildlife, geology, and lore of Mt. Kenya. Porters are also available to carry non-essential daypack items such as sleeping bags and mattresses, extra water, solid and frozen foods, and cooking equipment. The porters you hire will lug whatever you ask of them, and most are trained to prepare your meals in the evenings and mornings.

For those who wish to take a more individualist approach, the guide and porters are not mandatory. The most popular routes up the mountain are well worn and easy to follow and fresh, spring water is plentiful. Make sure to plan your routes before setting out, however, especially if you expect to sleep in the camps, which can be separated by great distances.

From the camp at Old Moses the path became a mountain walking trail instead of a rough road. We were happy to traverse the hillsides covered by blooming plants, green mountain grasses, cedar shrubs, and occasional freshwater streams and rivers clean and clear enough to drink straight out of. The view outward to the plains below extended all the way to the Aberdare Ridge to the west. We could also see clouds beginning to form up valley around Mt. Kenya’s three highest peaks - Pt. Lenana 16355’, Nelion 17022’, Batian 17058’.

The route we chose made a crossing from the Liki North drainage into Mackinder Valley, a deep U shaped canyon leading up to Shipton Cave and Camp. The trail took us downhill into the drainage and up again to cross over the next ridge into Mackinder. The hill climb is where we used up our calories from breakfast, and most of the strength in our legs. The elevation gain started setting in as well, causing us to take more breaks to catch fleeting breaths. We met a few groups of people coming down from Shipton that day. Some of them gave us looks like we were crazy. One group thought there was no way we could make it. The midday sun overhead, we still felt we had plenty of time to get there.

Mt. Kenya National Park offers a number of unique routes and environments for the adventurous outdoor explorer. A trek can be designed to suit your time schedule, from two night stays that reach Pt. Lenana - the highest peak accessible without technical climbing - to five or six night stays for those who wish to explore the scenery seldom visited by most tourists - including harnessed climbing to Battion, Mt. Kenya’s highest peak. Waterfalls, pristine cirques, moorland meadows, and Afro Alpine vegetation are some of the features waiting to be uncovered.

Along the route through Mackinder Valley we saw the hyrax, an animal that lives among rocks and boulders. Its body the size of a large rabbit, it is actually the closest genetic relative to the elephant! Along the river banks sunbirds, starlings, and other birds sat in the tops of the cactus like trees.

The route became less steep but the long day started to wear us down. We stopped for a few breaks, eating chocolate in hopes of getting some new energy; and to rest our tired legs. With the peaks in sight we slogged on enjoying the wonderful light of evening, making our way into Shipton Camp at 5:30, about 45 minutes before dark.

Accomodations on the mountain are extremely basic. Each camp houses a number of bunk beds with mattresses indented into the concave form of a human body. What is lacking in comfort is made up in necessity: a mess hall area for cooking, protected from the wind, and spring water to rehydrate after a climb.

We awoke at 3:00 am the next morning. Still tired but motivated enough to set out, we made a quick breakfast and got on to the trail, flashlights to see the way. The trail to Pt. Lenanna is steep, and slick, the result of an area formerly covered by glaciers now exposed to the elements of wind and water.

Climbing to an elevation higher than I had ever reached both thrilled me and caused some anxiety. Sickness caused by rapid elevation gain can be fatal to humans and we had made a big gain no less than 12 hours earlier. I had no headache - the first sign of altitude sickness - and I was in no rush to get to the top. The air became noticeably thinner as we reached 14,000’ and my heart rate would rise rapidly if I didn’t give myself a rest.

The eastern horizon became saturated with orange color as the sun made its way into view. I could still see stars to the west and the flat edges of the earth in all directions. Some other folks had already reached the summit when the first ray of light hit the peak. We stopped to witness the break of the new day. A few minutes later we made the summit, congratulating each other and snapping a quick photo for evidence. We took a few minutes to identify Kilimanjaro poking out above the clouds in Tanzania to the south, then turned to head back down, chased out by the wind and bitter chill nearly 5000 meters above sea level.

Reaching the peak is only making the halfway point of any climb, and sometimes the way down is more difficult than the ascent. The route was quite slippery in spots and maintaining focus and concentration was necessary to avoid a fall. Fortunately everyone made it down without incident.
Returning safely to the trailhead at the Siriman gate the next day the sense of accomplishment boasted our spirits. We had some sore muscles from the weight of our packs. Thankfully everyone made the return on their own power. We were informed that we were the first group to climb from the trailhead to Shipton Camp in one day. To commemorate our ambitious journey we took a photo that is now displayed in the Kenya Wildlife Service office at the Siriman Gate.

African rhinos have reached record numbers for the first time in decades, but the Northern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) is on the brink of extinction.
The figures, complied by the IUCN Species Survival Commission African Rhino Specialist Group, show there are now more than 21,000 African rhinos.
According to the results, the white rhino (Ceratotherium simum) has increased from 14,540 in 2005 to 17,480 in 2007. It is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, but one of its two subspecies, the Northern white rhino, is listed as Critically Endangered and is on the brink of extinction.
It is restricted in the wild to Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the only remaining population was reduced by poaching from 30 in April 2003 to only four confirmed animals by August 2006.
“Worryingly, recent fieldwork has so far failed to find any presence of these four remaining rhinos,” says Dr Martin Brooks, Chair of the IUCN SSC African Rhino Specialist Group. “Unless animals are found during the intensive surveys that are planned under the direction of the African Parks Foundation, the subspecies may be doomed to extinction.”
In contrast, the other subspecies, the Southern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum simum), is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List and continues to increase in numbers and range.
Similarly, the population of African black rhino (Diceros bicornis), has increased from 3,730 in 2005 to 4,180 in 2007, although it still remains Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. In the last two years alone, numbers have risen by about 450 animals, with several new populations being founded or enhanced through translocation, such as in North Luangwa National Park, Zambia.

“This is fantastic news for the African black rhino,” says Dr Richard Emslie, Scientific Officer of the IUCN SSC African Rhino Specialist Group. “However, these magnificent creatures are not out of the woods yet. They are still classed as Critically Endangered and face increasing threats of poaching and civil unrest. There is no room for complacency.”
The majority of African black rhino can be found in just four countries – Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia and Kenya but with increasing numbers in a number of other range states. All countries with breeding populations have recorded increases, except Zimbabwe, whose numbers are slightly down.
Poaching for rhino horn remains the rhino’s Achilles heel, and while under control in many countries it has been responsible for significant losses in both the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe.
“Even though protection from poaching is critical, effective rhino conservation must also include intensive monitoring and biological management to ensure annual growth rates of at least 5 % per year so that surplus rhinos are made available to create new populations,” says Dr Martin Brooks.

Eine amerikanische Forschergruppe sucht in den Klimaschwankungen während der vergangenen vier Millionen eine Antwort auf die Frage, was den Menschen zum Menschen machte.
(jkm) - Am sechsten Schöpfungstag schuf Gott den Menschen zu seinem Ebenbild. Für ein Drittel der Weltbevölkerung ist der biblische Schöpfungsbericht die Grundlage ihres Glaubens und Wissens. Eine amerikanische Forschergruppe sucht dagegen im globalen Klimawandel eine Antwort auf die Frage, was den Menschen zum Menschen machte.
Drei Mitarbeiter des amerikanischen Nationalmuseums, René Bobe, Anna Behrensmeyer und Ralph Chapman, vergleichen in der aktuellen Ausgabe des "Journal of Human Evolution" die Klimaveränderungen während der vergangenen vier Millionen Jahre mit den Entwicklungssprüngen in der Säugetierfauna Ostafrikas.
Ihre Studie ist Teil des Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), das 1990 vom amerikanischen Kongress eingerichtet wurde, um weltweite Veränderungen der Umwelt zu beobachten, zu dokumentieren und vorherzusagen.
Als Vergleichsbasis wählten die Wissenschaftler die besonders zahlreich erhaltenen Fossilien im Tal des Omo-Flusses im Südwesten Äthiopiens. Die zerklüfteten Schluchten des 900 Kilometer langen Stroms dienten als Durchgangsstraße für alle Entwicklungsphasen des Menschen, angefangen beim Australopithecus, dem aufrecht gehenden "Südaffen".
Die säurearmen Böden am Nordrand des Afrikanischen Grabens fördern die Konservierung der fossilen Knochen. Außerdem ist in allen Erdschichten Vulkanasche anzutreffen. Die eingelagerten Elemente Kalium und Argon ermöglichen eine genaue Datierung der Funde selbst aus erdgeschichtlichen Zeiten, in denen andere Verfahren versagen.
Im gesamten Zeitraum zwischen 3,4 und zwei Millionen Jahren vor heute beobachten die Forscher einen ständigen Rückgang der Temperaturen und eine Zunahme der Häufigkeit von Klimaumschwüngen mit ausgeprägten Temperaturgegensätzen. Diesem Langzeittrend entspricht eine Ausdünnung des dichten Baumbestands hin zu offenen Waldländern.
Vor 2,9 bis 2,7 Millionen Jahren lässt sich erstmals eine deutliche Veränderung in der Tierwelt feststellen. Die Zahl der Säugetiere wuchs wegen der günstigen Nahrungsbedingungen ganz erheblich an, ohne dass es zu einer Ausbreitung neuer Tierarten gekommen wäre.
Ein weiterer Wechsel vor etwa 2,5 Millionen Jahren fällt mit dem Auftreten des ersten Menschen, den frühesten Werkzeugfunden und dem Aussterben des kräftig gebauten Australopithecus zusammen.
Auf ein 200.000 Jahre dauerndes Intervall, in dem sich die Tierwelt im Omo-Tal kaum verändert hatte, folgte eine Zeit großer Schwankungen im Bestand der Säugetiere. In dieser entscheidenden Epoche von 100.000 Jahren setzte sich der moderne Mensch gegen seine Vorfahren durch.
Dennoch meinen die Forscher, dass die Veränderungen in der Tierwelt nicht vom Menschen verursacht wurden. "Wir schließen," so schreiben sie, "dass der Klimawandel bedeutende Veränderungen der Vegetation im vorzeitlichen Ökosystem des Omo-Tales auslöste und eine plausible Erklärung für den allmählichen ökologischen Wandel vom dichten Baumwuchs zum offenen Waldland bietet."
Für den Erfolg des modernen Menschen ist demnach seine große Anpassungsfähigkeit an einen häufigen und schnellen Wechsel des Klimas, der Vegetation und des Tierbestands verantwortlich.

We have a wonderfull forest at Rhino Watch. Beside the forest we bought some agriculture land that we used to set up the Standart Class Chalets. Now we try to get the original Flora growing again. But we mix it with some colorfull flowers. During the dry season we have to water the plants every single day, so Joseph, the gardener, developed a technic with used water bottles.....

Kenya is a big country and roads can be bad in deserted areas. In this case we use bush pilots. Dave Allan is an old " Kenya cowboy". I spent many hours in his plane filming for " The last paradises".

If we go to Lake Turkana we use this type of aircraft. It´s´an unforgetable experience to fly in Kenya.

Also to reach Rhino Watch you can use a plane. Its a 25 minute flight from Wilson airport to Mweiga airstrip or Solio airstrip.

The great Wildbeast Migration

Some weeks ago our german manager Peter arrived. He is really taking care and we make a really good progress.

Here you see the cottages in the standart class area.
They will have a 5x5m room, a big bathroom and a veranda facing Mt. Kenia. The stone walls protect you in cold nights. We are 1800m high. No moscito´s but the nights can be chilly. The roof is made from traditionell Makuti. It takes ages to finish a roof but it´s really beautifull.
